Sally says about her work "This picture, “Imaginary Landscape #2, seeks to capture in a simple, idealized way the beauty and drama of the natural world, to which I’ve always been drawn.
I grew up in California, where I was fortunate to be “imprinted” on the likes of Big Sur, Yosemite, and countless hidden beauty spots.
This picture is one in a series of 15 collages I created in spring of 2021, when we were living in COViD quarantine. The collages are mostly made with paper on paper, a few with paper on wood panels. Other ingredients are acrylic paints, varnish, glue, and the occasional bit of organic matter (leaf from the yard, e.g.)
In my collage making, the paper leads the way. Most of the paper is recycled or repurposed or simply found. I hand paint the papers, then tear or cut them to find shapes that work. Tearing, especially, tends to create natural-looking lines, which in turn lend themselves to landscape. I work with only a general idea of what my finished picture will be, adding more details as I go: a creature here (the fox), a small shrub there, moving and re-moving and re-imagining, painting more as needed — until the landscape is complete."
